Goportis - the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information with partners TIB, ZB MED and ZBW - has taken another step towards assuming responsibility for the long-term storage and availability of text and non-textual materials. The association is developing concepts to secure stocks for the long-term at libraries involved whilst taking into account experiences so far and theoretical approaches. Deciding on a professional archiving system means that an important precondition for the long-term availability of digital stocks has now been met.
Producers and users of academic materials these days make justifiably high demands with regard to the integrity, authenticity, reliability and citability of digital materials. Goportis intends to face up to this challenge with a reliable long-term archive and state-of-the-art quality assurance scheme. Protecting publication rights, ensuring constant availability, enriching digital stocks with bibliographical and technical metadata, enabling professional research and presenting the data digitally in an appropriate manner are all important aspects of a contemporary approach to digital long-term archiving.Chairman of the Goportis association and Director of the TIB, Uwe Rosemann, says, "There is no universal strategy for archiving materials. It is not enough to modify conventional processes intended only for text media. We must take into account both the conditions for the creation of digital material and the requirements for processing as well as in particular the users' requirements for the availability of material. In order for this to happen an appropriate system must be implemented. By engaging Ex Libris as a service partner and deciding on the product Rosetta we have not only created the conditions for the successful collection and storage of digital material, we have also made significant progress in our joint Goportis strategy."
