Full text service

The full text service of the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information – Goportis – provides fast and simple access to digital and print full texts, articles, books, conference reports, dissertations and research reports either as copies (articles) or on loan (books). The service is offered worldwide.

The available integrated search and order systems include the subject-specific portals for medicine (Medpilot), nutritional sciences (Greenpilot), science and technology (GetInfo) and economic sciences (EconBiz). Regardless of which portal is used, the following services will be provided in the future:

  • Accessibility of Goportis partner resources from every portal

  • Immediate download availability of electronic full texts. No-charge access to licensed journal content.

  • Simple and convenient ordering of print full texts, which are then delivered on demand within 72, 24 or 3 hours to the workplace.

  • Additional features include a single customer number – regardless of which portal is used – uniform prices, and a single bill.

The full text service is the core business and competence of the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information. Full text service covers both delivery of print texts (“classic document delivery”) as well as immediate availability of digital publications. The term full text service for textual documents is to be expanded to include digital objects such as primary research data, AV media, 3D models, etc.

The full text service is provided worldwide to academic and commercial customers as well as private persons. Limitations of service to all customer groups in all countries result from copyright restrictions, import prohibitions and licensing contracts. For complete information go to Document Delivery Service.

The spectrum of disciplines covered includes engineering and natural sciences, medicine, nutritional sciences, agriculture and the environment as well as economic sciences and business practice.
Each of the discipline-specific portals, primarily geared to the requirements of its own scientific community, offers search in the catalogues of all three German National Libraries. This means that the TIB catalogue, the ZB MED catalogue and the ZBW catalogue are integrated in all four portals for search and subsequent document ordering.

More than one million articles are immediately accessible in electronic form. These are mostly articles from the STM subject areas published since 1993, including the resources of Springer, Thieme, Karger, and IOP etc. The articles can be searched in the discipline-specific portal and are available for immediate download. The advantages include

  • very high quality – original PDF, retrievable, colour;
  • the libraries that supply the documents are the purchasers vis-à-vis the publishers – confidentiality is ensured;
  • the total price is displayed before the article is purchased;
  • existing publisher subscriptions held by a company or research institutions can be checked by IP, ensuring direct no-charge access to documents where applicable;
  • Open Access articles are also available at no additional charge.

The service is being continuously expanded and is subjected to regular updates; see also entry on licensing negotiations.
Documents not available in electronic form can be ordered as usual.

Copyright Law
Of course the Goportis libraries comply with the provisions of copyright law. This may mean that

  • Documents have DRM protection.
    Detailed information about DRM

  • Electronic delivery is not permitted.

  • Delivery to certain groups of customers in certain countries is not permissible.

Detailed information about copyright law

The deliverability of all documents is ensured by means of negotiations with the licensors, in particular the publishers but also including collecting societies such as VG Wort. The objective is to establish the capacity to deliver all documents in electronic form as well. Developments in the field of national and international copyright are continuously monitored. (see licences).

Full Service
Documents that are not available in the Goportis libraries are obtained, depending on the specific subject matter, from other document suppliers, research institutions, and authors worldwide. A surcharge to the usual delivery prices applies to documents of this kind that are successfully tracked down and delivered.

Status:

1st phase – location-dependent price: TIB and ZB MED are already providing documents in FullService from the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information at this price for documents supplied from their own libraries.

2nd phase – search in all catalogues: Search in the catalogues of the three libraries using the discipline-specific portals medicine (Medpilot), nutrition, environment, agriculture, (Greenpilot) and engineering and natural sciences (GetInfo will go online at the beginning of 2010. Integration in the portal for economic sciences and business practice (Econbiz) will follow at a later date. Use of different discipline-specific portals requires a separate login for each portal.

3rd phase – single customer number: One login, one customer number, one bill - to be realized by July 2010.
